Youtube Hyperbole

Quick post on Youtube’s being blocked in China. Yes, it’s happening. No, we don’t like it.

But a couple of comments:

1. Anyone who is shocked or surprised is just making themselves look stupid. Stop it.

2. Let’s put this into perspective. When Google was blocked a few years ago for a couple of days, this had a real impact on business. I remember not being able to get some work done because I couldn’t access the Google. But Youtube? Yes, there might be a few people out there who depend on Youtube for their livelihood, but I don’t think we’re talking about a huge number. This is not the end of the world.

3. Cut out the hyperbolic language. Headlines like this: Outrage in aftermath of China’s YouTube Censorship are a poor reflection on the editors that come up with this nonsense. We can be annoyed, disappointed, even pissed off. But “outraged”? I don’t think so.
