The China expert is an anachronism. Perhaps 20-30 years ago there were only a handful of people who had even been to China. China at that time still held its mystique. The inside knowledge they held (however sparse) compared to anyone else was grounds for calling them an expert. However, now everyone knows about China (or Choina as it is known in Australia) their expertise is usurped. Therefore anyone who calls themself a China expert TODAY is by definition a moron. Funnily enough, the 'Zhongguo Tong" also lingers as a way of flattering foreigners.

Credibility is always an issue and self-labelling is inherently conflicted and likely to be unreliable. It's a sellers market in hucksterism.

You're right. That's rather interesting. Must have something to do with Western people thinking that Asia is the land of mystery. If a place is mysterious, one must need an expert guide.

Actually I thought it stopped with China experts are a contradiction in terms, and so do not exist.

Not sure why the term "China expert" rolls off the tongue with such silky fluidity. Try saying "America expert", or "Europe expert" out loud - the words just fall flat.

What a refreshing bit of humility from Huntmans. All I normally see in the western media are pundits and economist who continually bash and lecture down to china on all kinds of topics yet have really no clue on china, it's people or have ever stepped foot in it.

A nice, logical dissection of all the possibilities.

The 'China expert' reminds me of the Paradoxasaur - according to the Urban Dictionary, "A magical make-believe creature that only exists if you do not believe in it, and if you believe in it it doesn't exist."
