That's a bummer. I always thought they would try to compete for a lower slice of the market here in China, but I guess they are trying to go head to head with Starbucks. Too bad.

Dunkin' Donuts took Shanghai by storm around New Year's this year. Five or six locations that I've seen so far. But don't get your hopes up for a beantown nostalgic moment. No drip coffee, only espresso drinks. Interior decor is intense in the pink/brown hues - definitely not a soothing combination for a hangover.

And my favorite in market localization: the Seaweed-and-Pork donut. Destined to become a classic...

I once ducked out of heavy rain in Kowloon into a McCafe and had a very respectable black coffee. McCafe is also rumoured to have beaten Starbucks in a few blind taste tests, but I don't take those kind of tests very seriously.

Like Thomas, I wouldn't usually go there to drink coffee and that is unlikely to change. Perhaps the refit is to make people feel better about going there to eat their usual junk food ?

Still no Dunkin' Donuts in HK...

Doesn't sound bad, but unfortunately the decor in the Beijing McCafes is not up to that standard. Don't know about the coffee either, but I'm not optimistic.

Haven't been to a Chinese McDonald's for a while, but I can say that in Germany, McDonald's has completely remodelled those locations that feature a McCafe. They now have a distinctly modernist look, and usually include coffee tables and sofas. The cafe sales counter is separate from the "standard McDonald's stuff" sales counter, and looks just like at Starbucks. All in all, the renovated branches have a pleasant feel, even though it's kind of weird, because they are not what you expect a McDonald's to be like, and their usual clientele seems a little out of place. Their lattes and mochas aren't bad. Plus, they are roughly half the price of Starbucks. However, I don't normally go there to drink coffee, and I don't know anybody who does.
