Chemical Plant Protest Gets Some Results
Last Friday’s satirical post notwithstanding, I have been interested to see whether the folks in Hunan protesting against the actions of a chemical plant will be successful.
As of today, it looks like some movement from the government:
Authorities in central China suspended two environment officials and detained a chemical plant boss after hundreds of residents protested, claiming the factory polluted a river and caused at least two deaths in the area, an official said Sunday. [Straits Times]
Let’s see what sort of compensation is forthcoming from the plant and the local government.

Glad to see a few environmental officials getting ready for the next big promotion, probably to provincial level of leadership. Local government officials will no doubt get more financial income from “distribution” of compensation too.
You’re not suggesting that financial transactions over here tend to be “sticky”? Egad.
